Hideki Matsuyama hit a second straight 65 to take a one-shot lead midway through the PGA Tour’s season-opening event in Hawaii.
The former Masters champion made eight birdies as he reached 36 holes at The Sentry with just one bogey on his card.
His total of 16 under par at Kapalua leaves him ahead of fellow major champion Collin Morikawa, who made five successive birdies starting at the 13th on his 65.
Maverick McNealy, who tied the lowest round of the day with a 64, and leader of the day Tom Hoge are among those a little further behind, alongside Canadian Corey Conners after a second consecutive 66 and Belgian Thomas Detry.
England’s Harry Hall birdied four of his final five holes en route to a 65, which took him into a 13-under-par group that also included U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark, both of whom scored 64s.
“I have two jobs,” Bradley said. “My only job is here, and then my other job is to be the captain and leader of the U.S. Ryder Cup team.
“I really enjoy being captain – and I love playing golf. So these are not difficult things. It’s stressful, sure, but I enjoy both.
Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre shot a 66 in the second round to reach 10 under par, two better than England’s Matt Fitzpatrick after a 65.
